Born Into Brothels:
What were your initial reactions to the film? At first, I thought that the movie wasn't going to be very good and it was not the best pick for a photography class. I didn't really pay attention at first but then it got better and kept ahold of my attention.
2) What is the role of photography in this film? The role of photography in this film is to teach kids that don't have much to get a different outlook on life. Photography made the have something to focus on besides working and being afraid. It taught them life skills they needed to Cicero in life and get out of their current situation.
3) What are the changes in the children’s outlook and personalities when they are taken out of the brothel to the beach and the zoo? They were so happy to be going on a "field trip" and to be able to take pictures of a different scenery. If was cool to see their ideas. Ajuit was especially happy when he went to Amsterdam and he took pictures starting from when they got on the plane until they left.
4) If these children were taken out of the brothel environment permanently, do you think that they could fully recover from the injustices and trauma that they have previously faced? Why? Why not? No because it was a part of their life for so long that it will always be in their memories of their childhood. Also, the most of the kids that got to go to school left and went back. I don't think they know anything else and a change in their lifestyle for the better would be too drastic for them to adapt.
5) Zana is not just documenting these children with her film, but she is enabling them to document what they see around them. What opportunity does this provide for them? This provides them the opportunity to tell their story through pictures and show everyone else their normal living environment and the struggles they have to go through every single day. It also shows them how through all their struggles, they are still happy and getting by.
